Callahan (Lt. William F. Jr.) Tunnel opens.

More than 2,000 people attend the ceremony for the opening of the tunnel in East Boston. Named for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority chairman’s son, who was killed in action in Italy during World War II, the tunnel connects the North End and East Boston. The toll is 25 cents. Ground was broken for the project on April 30, 1959. The tunnel is It is sold by the city to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority on April 29, 1959. Tolls are charged beginning in 1983.
